[Korean Restaurant Review] Hadongkwan Coex Mall Branch – The Must-Visit Gomtang Restaurant

Hadongkwan Coex Mall Branch

If you’re a fan of gomtang (Korean beef bone soup), Hadongkwan is a name you’ve probably heard before. It’s a legendary spot that almost every Korean knows. Craving a warm bowl of gomtang, I decided to visit the Hadongkwan branch located in Coex Mall, Samseong-dong, Gangnam, Seoul.

Finding the place in Coex Mall might be a bit tricky, but here’s a tip: look for Youngpoong Bookstore. The restaurant is right next to it, so head there to find it easily.

Hadongkwan has only four locations: the main branch in Myeong-dong, the Coex Mall branch, Yeouido Branch No.1, and the Yeouido branch. The Coex Mall branch is particularly popular among office workers and shoppers due to its prime location in bustling Gangnam. Even shortly after opening hours, the restaurant starts to fill up with customers.

During peak dining hours, it’s often hard to find a seat, even at other branches. I recommend going a little early to avoid the rush. Keep in mind that once they run out of ingredients, they close for the day. While their official hours extend until 7 PM, chances are slim that you’ll find them open if you arrive late. Always call ahead in the late afternoon to check availability.

My Experience

I ordered the Special Gomtang, which comes with additional beef tripe (yang). Unlike regular gomtang, it includes these extra cuts for a richer flavor. A unique feature of Hadongkwan’s gomtang is that it’s served with the rice already mixed into the soup. It’s not served separately, which sets it apart from other gomtang restaurants.

Another distinctive detail is that the spoon and chopsticks come already placed in the soup bowl when it’s served. The side dishes are simple: a mix of kimchi and radish kimchi (kkakdugi).

The soup is clear and light, with a delicate and clean flavor. For those who prefer a stronger taste, you can adjust the seasoning with the salt provided at the table. Personally, I enjoyed the natural, unsalted flavor—it’s soothing and mild.

The beef quality is excellent, tender, and flavorful. Hadongkwan exclusively uses premium Korean beef (hanwoo) and 100% locally sourced ingredients. This commitment to quality makes the meal even more trustworthy and enjoyable.

If you haven’t been to Hadongkwan yet, I highly recommend giving it a try. It’s a classic taste of Korea that’s well worth experiencing!
