Namdaemun Market’s famous Vegetable Hotteok is a must-try!
When visiting Namdaemun Market, you can’t miss the braised cutlassfish (Galchi Jorim) for a meal and a vegetable hotteok as dessert.
Even on holidays, the place is bustling with people. The line at the vegetable hotteok stall seems endless, and the owners are as busy as ever. The lady making the hotteok isn’t slow, but since many customers buy multiple pieces at once, the line doesn’t move very quickly. I waited about 40 minutes to an hour. Standing in line can be tiring, but the wait is worth it. I can only imagine how exhausting it must be for the owners, who work tirelessly to make hotteok non-stop.
The Taste
It’s delicious! The wait is definitely worth it.
This stall specializes in vegetable hotteok. The exterior is crispy, while the inside remains moist. The filling has a sweet and savory japchae-like flavor. At first, it’s too hot to eat, but after a few blows to cool it down, it’s gone in no time!
The hotteok is served in a paper cup with napkins, making it easy to enjoy while standing right in front of the stall. The Namdaemun and Myeongdong areas are known for their large number of foreign visitors, and it’s no surprise that many of them line up to try this treat as well.
